The availability of so many different kinds of motorcycle luggage makes it easy to get the right combination of pieces that will let you do just about anything, from grocery shopping to long vacations. It’s another way to personalize your bike, too.
There are types of bags and cases that can be placed all over the bike to add storage space. Some are best for holding little things that you need within reach. Others let you travel for weeks at a time. Which types of luggage you need will depend on the kind of riding that you do.
Soft sided motorcycle luggage bag styles may be made from leather, synthetic leather, pvc, or canvas. Most of them are waterproof and finished with zippers to keep the contents secure and dry. Hard motorcycle luggage is made from plastic or metal. Most of the luggage sold today is designed to fit a wide range of different bikes, but you should still make sure that your model will be accommodated before you buy.
The most basic piece of luggage for motorcycle riders is the backpack. It’s good for short trips and small lighter items. It’s not the best choice for longer trips where you will need to carry more, and heavier, items with you.
Saddle bags are also popular. Those who take frequent serious touring trips like the durability and capacity of the hard-sided panniers. Styles with removable inner bags are particularly useful for longer trips, when you may want to take the contents out without hassling with removing and reinstalling the whole bag apparatus.
Tank bags and windshield bags are convenient for keeping small items within reach. A map can be inserted into the top clear pocket of a tank bag for easy reference while riding. Tank bags can be awkward on some sport bikes with a more forward riding position, and they may interfere with steering if the bag is too big for the bike. A few styles use powerful magnets or straps so no hardware is needed.
Tail bags, sissy bar bags, and duffel style or roll bags are carried on the back of the bike. They may be mounted directly using brackets or bungeed to a luggage rack.
