Motorcycles: Using Highway Bars as Footrests? Other foot positions?

I will soon buy a Motorcycle, and am strongly considering “highway bars” (if that’s the correct term) as part of my purchase. I understand they help protect both the bike and rider in a fall, but I also heard they are good for adding another foot position. This is important to me, as I will do some touring. (My new bike will not have floorboards; the dealer does not offer them for the Honda Shadow Aero 750.) How does the rider rest his or her feet on the highway bars? Is it generally comfortable? Does anything need to be added to the highway bars in order to use them as “footrests?” Any negatives on highway bars? Any additional suggestions for adding other foot positions? Thank you.

Starting with my second bike, I have put highway pegs on all of them.
While they MAY help protect the bike, never count on them to protect you.
There are many different types of mounting. Through some experimentation, you find the best position for your comfort.

If you really want floorboards, something can be arranged.
They don’t need to come from a dealer.
